SHANG GANG.
As a recent transplant to Evanston from San Francisco, I was immediately unnerved about the possibility of not having access to Chinese food. All of that changed when I walked into Shang Noodle - my fears were quelled and my heart was comforted.
Shang Noodle is an unsuspecting restaurant that lets you taste the flavors of China in the heart of the Americana midwest. From when you walk in and see the vast number of Chinese diners, you know that you're in an authentic restaurant. The menu is well-curated and accommodates any diners' palate. They have quintessential dishes such as mapo tofu and orange chicken, but they also feature less mainstream dishes such as beef tendon, pickled vegetables, dry pot, and more. Each dish comes out steaming hot and pairs perfectly with the fluffy rice, enveloping your senses in a blanket of comfort. I constantly come back for the yu shang eggplant - a dish profiling sour and spice that truly showcases all that eggplant can be. Portion size is enormous in the best way possible, and makes for delicious leftovers!
Shang Noodle is always there for me after a stressful week or an especially arduous final. I've come with groups both small and large, and Shang has always been hospitable and welcoming. SHANG GANG FOR LIFE. -

Ventured up to Evanston to give this place a shot rather than visit our usual Chicago Chinatown spots. Overall I'd say it hit the spot and satisfied our Chinese food and noodle cravings. I'll say we really enjoyed the combination chow mein (noodles were great) and the sour pickled fish filet casserole (really nice soup base and generous amounts of fish). The triple the fun platter didn't quite hit the mark for me and I could live without another order of it. And sadly, their boba was pretty disappointing as well. But in terms of ambiance, service, and cleanliness, Shang Noodles & Chinese was a breath of fresh air from all the grungy spots with minimal service we're used to in Chinatown.
Overall, a solid spot for Chinese food or noodles in general. 'Til next time, cheers! -

The portion sizes were great for the price point, but overall I'd say the meal was pretty mediocre.
The cha jang mein was....okay. I thought the noodles were fine but the sauce wasn't very rich in flavor or consistency. I wasn't wowed or impressed by anything in the dish, and it was borderline a little bland. Also, I asked one of the waiters for a pair of scissors to cut the noodles and he said they didn't have scissors which I thought was weird for a restaurant that specializes in noodles??
The mapo tofu was much more convincing, in my opinion. The tofu was very silky and paired wonderfully with the sharp spices. It did lack the depth of more authentic flavors, but I think it's still worth trying. -

At first when I came to this place, I came for its beef noodles. And I forgot since when, I would only order from its mini hotpot menu.
There were so many things you can get to choose from. My personal favorite is the fish and lamb. And the portion is just huuuuuuuuugggggggge. Normally when my friend and I come here, they would have half left, enough for another meal, while I finish everything all by myself lol. -

Solid broth in the beef needle soup. Nice chili shrimp with solid crunch. I'll be back to try the rest of the menu!
